  • Former 'Idol' contestant to be at Dodge County Fair
    The best part of performing at a fair is the excitement in the air, Gokey said from Utah this week. “It may sound crazy but I can’t wait to feel the anticipation in the crowd. There is nothing like it. “There is nothing like a good vibe coming from the crowd,” the third place finisher on season eight of “American Idol,” said.
  • Improvements made at Dodge County Fairgrounds
    This year, improvements focused on several other well-used areas. The horse arena, youth building and the co-op building saw work over the last year. Funding for projects started with grants from Farm Tech Days.
  • Get Involved with Outdoor Expo
    The sixth annual Wisconsin Outdoor Education Expo will celebrate Wisconsin's outdoors and aims to inspire healthy, active youth at the Dodge County Fairgrounds May 19 and 20 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. As of 2011, the Wisconsin Outdoor Education Expo will have hosted more than 21,000 attendees.

    Dodge County Fair Association announced the grandstand acts that will perform during the fair Aug. 17 to 21. Leading the way Wednesday will be Rodney Atkins. On Thursday, Luke Bryan will take the stage. The tradition of having a rock band on Friday will continue with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. No act has been booked yet for Saturday. The popular demolition derbies will be held twice on Sunday.

    More than $7,000 raised through the sale of $1 wristbands to those who drank alcohol at the Dodge County Fair was donated to six organizations on Friday morning. Sale of the wristbands was new this year and drew some criticism, but Fair Association President Jim Schoenike said the system was a success and will remain in place for the 2011 fair.

    But he was pleased with the response to efforts in recent years to add entertainment through smaller stages including the Radio Park stage and the Talent Tent stage. Schoenike said fair goers have given positive feedback about the additional music.

    The Dodge County Fair was put on hold Friday evening as the county was put under a thunderstorm warning and severe weather moved through at approximately 5 p.m.

    Wisconsin's 63rd Alice in Dairyland returned to her roots on Thursday by visiting the Dodge County Fair. "It's so fun to be back here at the Dodge County Fair," said Christine (Lepple) Lindner, originally from Beaver Dam.

    A 23-year-old Beaver Dam woman was named the Dodge County Fairest of the Fair on Wednesday and began her year-long reign by announcing Josh Turner on stage that night. Danielle Hammer is the daughter of Charles Hammer and Nancy Kavazanjian, both of Beaver Dam. She is a junior at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and is working toward her degree in agricultural business and international relations.

    Youth have the option of choosing a project from 34 different categories ranging from knitting and crocheting to raising cattle or sheep. Most 4-H youths end up taking on a number of projects that allow them to get hands-on experience in a field they enjoy or in which they have interest.

    Sue Putra, of Watertown, has been judging at fairs for 35 years. She said she loved 4-H and was active in Rock County. She attended UW-Stout to pursue a degree in education to be a home economics teacher. As soon as she graduated, she applied to be a judge.

    Three popular country entertainers and a rock band will head the entertainment for the fair this year. Josh Turner will kick off the fair's evening entertainment on Wednesday, with Kellie Pickler performing on Thursday and Eric Church on Saturday. Each will perform one show at 8 p.m.

    The Dodge County Fair Association is seeking ambitious, enthusiastic and outgoing individuals age 18 as of January 2011 to enter the 2010 Dodge County Fairest of the Fair contest.

    The donation will be made to the Dodge County Fair Association, a stockholder group that operates the fairgrounds and organizes the annual fair event.

    Jim Scheonike, president of the Dodge County Fair Association, said Monday that acts have been confirmed for the fair set for Aug. 18 to 22. He said attendees can also expect a few upgrades to fairground facilities that will make acts louder and brighter.
