Laufenberg turns deer harvest into county-fair lesson

For 14-year-old Dane Laufenberg of Columbus, Wisconsin, the Dodge County Fair in Beaver Dam is about more than showing what he can make. It’s a chance to turn experiences into projects, learn something new, and share that knowledge with others.

A sixth-year member of Astico Perseverance 4-H Club, Dane brought a natural sciences educational display for competition at the Dodge County Fair, this year. The project is inspired by a significant milestone in his young life. “I chose this project, because it was my first year harvesting a deer,” Dane said. “It was a doe. I wanted to make an educational display about the doe.”

His project combined hands-on work, research, and a little creativity. By examining the doe’s teeth, Dane determined the deer was approximately 4.5 to 5.5 years old, “probably closer to 4.5.”

Creating the European mount was a project in itself. “I removed the head from the rest of the body, skinned it, boiled it, and then let it sit in the water for three days,” he explained. After cleaning the skull, Dane bleached it to create the finished European mount.

From there, he built the educational display, creating wooden walls and using a laser printer and SVG file to cut words into wood. He added numbered labels to the skull, painted the background and finished the display with moss and a rotating plate so visitors could easily view it.

But for Dane, the project has meaning beyond the craftsmanship. “I chose this project, because it was the first deer I harvested, and I wanted to memorialize the experience,” he said.

The deer display is just one of several projects Dane is exhibiting at this year’s fair. He entered photography, a laser-printed wooden ornament, and habanero-pineapple jam. He will also show his short-haired cat, Rage.

“I’ve met a lot of people working on my projects and talking to them about what they’re doing,” Dane said. “My favorite part of exhibiting at the fair is the process of making my projects before taking them to the fair.”

Dodge County Fairgrounds Receives $3,735.61 Boost from Piggly Wiggly "Round-Up" Campaign

The Dodge County Fair Association is thrilled to announce the successful completion of the March "Round Up at the Register" campaign, hosted by Fox Brothers Piggly Wiggly stores in Beaver Dam and Mayville. Thanks to the incredible generosity of local shoppers and the dedicated support of Fox Brothers staff, the initiative raised a fantastic total of $3,735.61 to support ongoing improvements at the Dodge County Fairgrounds.

A check presentation recently took place to mark the occasion. Tyia Kemnitz, Store Director of the Mayville location, proudly presented the donation to Sharon Keil, Fair Association Treasurer, and Dale Norenberg, Fair Association Vice President.

"We are deeply grateful to Fox Brothers Piggly Wiggly and everyone in the Beaver Dam and Mayville communities who chose to round up their change this March," said Sharon Keil. "Every cent of this contributes directly to keeping our fairgrounds a safe, vibrant, and modern space for families to gather."

Investing in Our Community’s Future

The Dodge County Fairgrounds are maintained entirely by the nonprofit Dodge County Fair Association. Unlike municipal parks, the fairgrounds rely heavily on community donations, sponsorships, and fundraisers like the Round-Up campaign to fund essential upkeep and capital improvements.

As a 501(c)(3) organization, the Fair Association has developed a robust, long-term improvement plan. The funds raised during the March campaign will be directly funneled into these projects, ensuring the fairgrounds can continue to serve as a premier regional event venue that supports:

Youth Education: Providing facilities for 4-H, FFA, and other youth-centered agricultural and educational programs.
Community Events: Hosting a diverse calendar of events, from local fundraisers to the annual Dodge County Fair.

There is no place quite like the Wisconsin summer festival circuit to experience the raw power of classic rock under the open sky, and this August, the ultimate live music tradition returns to the Moraine Park Main Stage. The Dodge County Fair Association is thrilled to announce that rock and roll icons George Thorogood and The Destroyers will perform on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 8:00 PM.

Fresh off a massive 2025 where they played nearly 90 explosive shows, were honored by the GRAMMY Museum, and saw George’s famed “Bad To The Bone” Gibson ES-125TDC guitar placed on permanent exhibit at The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the band is extending The Baddest Show on Earth Tour into 2026. With 53 years of “playing rock & roll hot enough to melt the polar icecaps,” Thorogood and his long-time bandmates—Jeff Simon, Bill Blough, Jim Suhler, and Buddy Leach—are bringing a “renewed taste for danger” to Beaver Dam.

We have some monumental news to share with our fairgoers, neighbors, and community partners! The Dodge County Fair Association is thrilled to announce the official purchase of 15 acres of land immediately to the west of our existing fairgrounds.

This acquisition, purchased from the Dorothy Stegner estate, marks a pivotal moment in our history. It ensures that the sights, sounds, and traditions of the Dodge County Fair have a permanent home to grow into for generations to come.

Honoring the Stegner Legacy

For years, the Stegner family has been more than just neighbors; they have been the silent engine behind our growth. By graciously allowing the Fair Association to rent this land, they provided the critical space needed for parking and expansion that allowed our events to flourish.

As the Stegner family prepared to sell the farm, the Fair Association recognized a “now or never” moment. Purchasing this land wasn’t just about adding acreage—it was about protecting our future. Without this land, our ability to host large-scale events and provide adequate parking would have been permanently compromised.

Investing in Our Community

While this is an exciting milestone, it is also a significant financial commitment. To secure this property, the Fair Association has taken out a new loan which, alongside our existing commitment for the WDS Stage in Good Karma Park, will take many years to repay.

As a non-profit organization, we operate without a massive safety net. Every dollar used to maintain and improve these grounds comes from:
